THE GREAT IDEAS ONLINE A Syntopical Approach to the Great Books
Maritain/Gilson Summer Institute Dear Max, From Thrusday, 13 July 2000, to Sunday, 16 July 2000, the American Maritian Association, the Maritain Gallery, and the Gilson Society will co-sponsor the first Maritain/Gilson Summer Institute at the Grailville Conference Center in Loveland, Ohio. The general theme of this Institute will be "The Arts of the Beautiful," based upon Etienne Gilson's book of the same name. The purpose of the meeting will be to engage in an intense reading, discussion, and reflection upon many of the issues Gilson examines in this work, such as: the relation of art to knowledge, the relation of science and ethics to art, the difference between industrial and fine arts, beauty in nature and art, properties of the beautiful, aesthetic experience, aesthetic judgment, talent and genius, originality, style, ideal, symbolism, imitation, religious art, being and art, poetry, sacred and abstract art and music, art and truth, and similar topics. The Institute's activities will include a joint reading and seminar and panel discussion of Gilson's text, several papers, and group activities involving the Maritain Gallery. Space will be limited to approximately 20 participants. Anyone interested in presenting a 20 minute paper on a topic related to the general theme should contact me quickly and send me a one paragraph abstract as soon as possible. Anyone interested in being a seminar participant or panel member should also contact me as soon as possible. Cost per person for the Institute will run $275.00 for room (double occupancy), meals, and registration, from Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon. We hope to continue this Institute as an annual event as a means of increasing the exposure of Thomistic thought within American culture.
