THE GREAT IDEAS ONLINE
A Syntopical Approach to the Great Books

The liberal arts are not merely indispensable; they are unavoidable, Nobody can decide for himself whether he is going to be a human being. The only question open to him is whether he will be an ignorant, undeveloped one or one who has sought to reach the highest point he is capable of attaining. The question, in short, is whether he will be a poor liberal artist or a good one. --Robert Maynard Hutchins

BUYING USED BOOKS ON-LINE: www.21northmain.com

Dear Max;

A new web site of particular interest to my fellow Center members has opened at www.21northmain.com. If you go to the site, you will find a searchable database of almost 10 million books aggregated from more than 2,200 dealers which may be purchased online using either a credit card (VISA or MasterCard). Institutional buyers may buy using pre-approved purchase orders. Purchase order users will gain the added benefit of consolidating billing from multiple dealers on a single invoice.

The searchable stock is the largest inventory of books available for online purchase anywhere. Despite the size of the database, however, finding books is quite easy. Users may apply an easy to use book search function, which allows searches by title, author and key word, from any location within the site. Early results indicate that books will be delivered within a few days of completing an online purchase.

Visit 21 North Main, your single source for purchasing used, out-of-print, and rare books from the world's largest network of book sellers.

Keep TGIO coming. With so much going on at 21 North Main, my life is hectic. I enjoy getting and reading The Great Ideas Online each week.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Max,

My reaction to Brian Hansen's Great Ideas Discussion Group at the Boulder Public Library has been strongly positive.

At first I had some doubts about the use of Aquinas and Aristotle as the main starting points for analysis and discussion. They are not my favorite philosophers - too much emphasis on taxonomy and putting names on things. But their view turns out to be surprisingly good for getting a reasoned discussion going. I like the emphasis on promoting a dialectical process; it does stimulate thought. Also, I like the notion of pursuing a particular major idea in depth. There are not too many forums available for this kind of endeavor nowadays.

I believe, too, that the discussion group leader makes a lot of difference. Brian Hansen conveys a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity about the topics under consideration. Also, his good humor and friendliness put people at ease.
