THE GREAT IDEAS ONLINE A Syntopical Approach to the Great Books
MEMBERS COMMENTS ON LOVE Dear Mr. Weismann, Dr. Adler's "Discourse on Love" puts the finger on a very pressing daily problem for all mankind -- good communication. Attempts to escape this human 'responsibility' will not do, since we all have to live with ourselves, and dare I say -- God. In my short practice as a Chiropractor and Christian I have come across certain times where people are more susceptible to listen and dare to understand another point of view. This sudden desire to cross this gap in understanding (one that I believe Marx referred to as the 'cataclysmic gap') is interestingly enough facilitated by a pressing need. Hence the hurting person willingly consults a doctor or a councillor. These two 'lovers' might thus some day wish to meet on common ground -- when extreme need (and it most certainly will) presses them some fine day. Doctors and councillors can make people aware of such needs, if they really exist, and if the consulting person needs to know about them. Too many manipulators create need where there isn't and shouldn't be any. I do thank Dr. Adler and the rest of you for your honourable efforts in pointing out the need for an education. Yours sincerely,
Heiner Kittel
Dear Max, Adler: "It is possible, on the other hand, that a discourse on love between a woman and a Platonist could never be resolved except in a manner suitable to the woman." Then that would be no suitable resolution. For if a woman insists on being loved for herself, whatever that self may be, and whether or not that self has the essences which the Platonist describes, then how is that love rather than a demand to be loved.
